Hi, I’m a fitness coach, mother, adventurer, cancer survivor, Air Force veteran, speaker, grandmother and widow. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned over the years with other women, especially widows and cancer survivors. I have a bachelors degree in Business Management, a Group Fitness Certification and a Weight Management Specialist Certificate through the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
After unexpectedly losing my husband in 2009, I turned to fitness to try and cope with my insurmountable grief. It was really helping. But then, less than a year after my husband died, in 2010, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, and at that point, fitness was out the window and I was in survival mode. The months continued to pass as I was still grieving my husband and received cancer treatment. I began feeling depressed looking in the mirror at my bald and disfigured body. I was full of anxiety, not sleeping well, not eating well and not really functioning in society well. After almost two years in that dark place, I found myself very overweight and depressed. I was a young, disfigured widow with no joy or light in my life.
Fortunately, deep down, I knew and vaguely remembered how exercising made me feel after my husband died. So I once again set out to get in the habit of exercising. It was hard. I joined a program just for cancer survivors to regain my strength and I began to eat right and lose weight and increase my strength. Over time, I made it to a healthy weight, but more importantly I was up and out of that dark hole. I began volunteering for the cancer program after I graduated and then became a certified fitness instructor so that I could assist my coach with the program. Later I was asked to start the same program at another gym on the other side of town. I was thrilled and excited to do it. Because I knew that fitness and eating healthy food pulled me out of that dark place, I wanted to share it with anyone and everyone that would come. It was amazing and I was doing what I loved, helping others find their strength and light again! I was also a regular guest speaker at a fitness spa. I share my story about cancer, transformation and encouraging others how to begin to get healthy even after traumatic life events. Speaking about grief and fitness and how the two dance together and encouraging others to not give up when things are the worst is something I feel passionate about.
Then Covid came…both gyms that I was teaching at were closed with no idea of when they would open…and that was the catalyst and the beginning of Wild Widow Wellness (W3 Tribe Fitness). In the beginning it was just a way to help us all cope with the shutdown mentally and physically. A few of us would meet on Zoom to exercise everyday and encourage each other. But then I had an idea of how it could be more for women needing easier and better access to fitness.
When I began my journey to get healthy, it wasn’t fast, it wasn’t easy, it was one step at a time and one day at a time. But I knew it was possible. Now I want to help others who might find themselves in the same situation (either physically, emotionally or both). I know in my soul that this is my purpose, to educate and help women dealing with grief, cancer, poor eating habits, and sedentary lifestyles to change their lives and find their joy and light again.
My mission is to help women live an active & healthy life even after being presented with some of life’s most brutal, soul crushing moments.
I'm not an influencer, I'm not a Barbie with a perfect body, I'm a survivor of many things who understands the curveballs life will throw at you... but I also understand the incredible value of feeling strong & healthy, both mentally and physically, when those curveballs come.
